Please be advised – when it comes to beverages, during this concert, Pepsi will be the most appropriate. But Suicidal Tendencies are more than just the authors of the hit song “Institutionalized,” which uses Pepsi, among other things, to mock society at large. They are, first and foremost, the forefathers of crossover thrash. They’re metal, they ooze punk energy, and they have a little street mischief up their sleeves. Go see ‘em and go cyco!
History:
The forefathers of crossover thrash and one of the leading bands taking charge of the emergent movement which crossbred metal with other genres. Suicidal Tendencies started out in 1980, though initially were not inhabiting metal landscapes. Their first recordings, including their debut self-titled album from 1983, were nestled in the land of hardcore punk. The aforementioned debut quickly excavated them from the punk underground, mainly thanks to the outstanding and unforgettable hardcore hit “Institutionalized.” Good things only continued. Four years later, the band presented to the world the record Join the Army where they leaned more into thrash metal (without eroding the hardcore bedrock). It was their first album to debut on the Billboard 200 chart. Their fame grew with subsequent records, each open to a wider variety of influences than the prior – from rock through punk to even alternative. During this period, Suicidal Tendencies managed to earn two gold records and greatly popularise crossover, with their next record, The Art of Rebellion (1992), being the pinnacle of their success. Despite all that, in the mid-90s, the band momentarily disbanded to then reunite at the end of the decade. Since then, the band stayed on course. They are still making inventive and colourful crossover thrash, enjoying their rightfully earned legend status in the genre. Their latest full-length record to date is the aptly titled Still Cyco Punk After All These Years, released in 2018, though the rumours of there being a new record on the horizon are becoming more and more persistent. The material allegedly is to be released this summer, around the time of the upcoming edition of the Mystic Festival.
