- GENRE: brutal death metal, death metal
- COUNTRY: USA
They were the first ones on the extreme scene to pay such substantial homage to the ancient deities of Egypt. They continue to do it, telling their mythical stories on the canvas of the most ruthless death metal. Nile takes no prisoners. Their death metal is composed of torturous, serpentine riffs, references to the vilest iterations of the genre and general noise married with inhuman speed. So what, you’re coming down to the catacombs with them or not?
History:
Nile’s career began in 1993 – the band was founded by Karl Sanders, thus far the only member that has been playing with the band since its inception and the brains behind this whole project. The initial stylistic leanings of the band were odd from today’s perspective because Nile used to play music a lot more akin to thrash than death metal. It took only one demo for that to change. On the EP Festival of Atonement, the Americans’ convention morphed into the sound that they have been playing more or less ever since. After the release of the EP Ramses, Bringer of War, the band piqued the interest of Relapse Records as they were entering international waters, and all the right wheels started turning.
In 1998, Nile released their full-length debut album, Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka, and the sophomore album, Black Seeds of Vengeance, released two years later, became a bonafide hit at the death metal scene. Not only has the band influenced the death metal revival at the turn of the 21st century, but they were also noteworthy for their completely original take on the genre. A take that’s technical, exceedingly brutal, and focused on songwriting. With time, the creative output of Sanders & Co. became even more technical, and the band achieved success after success within their niche. Perhaps their most popular release, Annihilation of the Wicked, solidified their genre mighty, with their standing remaining firm-footed. Nile’s latest record is The Underworld Awaits Us All.
